Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, on a chevron rompu Or three mullets of the field within a bordure Argent.

Symbolism
The shield is blue for Infantry. The chevron rompu represents the "Breaking Through" of the Hindenburg Line during World War I. The three mullets (stars) symbolize the battle honors awarded the unit during World War I.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 278th Infantry Regiment on 20 August 1951. It was redesignated for the 278th Armored Infantry Battalion on 30 June 1955. The insignia was rescinded on 29 December 1960.
